Biblical Wifehood – Wife as a Helper

Being a Wife, is being a helper. In Genesis (2:18), the Lord stated that,“..it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” When God created a woman, He created a wife. Look at what Genesis 2 says when God created Eve:

“22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:22-24)

Notice how in verse 24, it is stated that the “man will leave his father and mother, and be united to his WIFE….” God created a wife when He created Eve.

He created a woman as a companion and helper, not as lesser, but as complementary to her husband. As John Piper stated “When God created male and female, he did not mean to glorify men and demean women, as if helper somehow meant lesser. God created humans — men and women together — as the pinnacle of all creation, crafting both in his very image (Genesis 1:27). He created them with distinct and complementary attributes, inclinations, and gifts that make them indispensable to one another and to his plan for filling the earth with his glory.”

As wives, we are called to be a helper who is “fit” or “suitable” for our husband. We can be compatible with our husband in many different ways whether spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Being “suitable” doesn’t mean having no differences, but being complementary to each other. Being complementary might mean that you both, as couple, might have multiple differences that work well together. As a helper, woman was not created to subjugation for Adam, but as a blessing to him.

Being a helper is being a blessing and a companion
